When Washington’s original architect, Pierre L’Enfant, designed the National Mall, he envisioned a grand central avenue that would act as a central axis and anchor all other avenues in our nation’s capital. In his plan, L’Enfant’s grand avenue would be a “place of general resort” and “public walks”. A place that would represent the grandeur of the new nation and highlighted the power of its people.

L’Enfant’s full vision would never be fully implemented, however, his design and ideas eventually took the form of the National Mall as we know it today. His “grand avenue” would indeed become a place of general resort and a perfect location to experience aboard two wheels.

Rides along the National Mall are documented in both Best Bike Rides DC and Best Easy Bike Rides, Washington DC.

THE NATIONAL MALL

Location: Washington, DC

Length: There are a myriad of bike paths, sidewalks, and bike lanes in the general vicinity of the National Mall available for cycling. The relatively flat nature of the area makes it perfect for riders of all skill levels. The routes I detail in Best Bike Rides DC and Best Easy Bike Rides, Washington DC take advantage of and highlight some of our most iconic monuments and memorials.
Ride Time: depends on routes chosen and amount of sight seeing
Ride Type: PATH
Difficulty: Level 1 Riding: The relative flat nature of the National Mall makes it the perfect location for riders of all skill levels. To fully enjoy the National Mall by bike I do highly recommend you head out as early in the morning as you can, especially on fair weather weekends. Regardless of routes chosen, you will also have to contend at one point or another with DC’s notorious traffic. Please use caution, especially fi riding with kids.

Note: The National Mall is home to many monuments and memorials that honor the memory and sacrifices of members of our armed forces. For that reason please do not ride your bike when visiting a memorial.

Book: The National Mall, along with other easy rides in the region, is featured in Best Easy Bike Rides, Washington DC. I also detail portions of the National Mall and other popular District rides in Best Bike Rides DC.
